Young Sheldon Season 6 Repeats Its Best Moment (But Doesn't Go As Far)

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Young Sheldon season 6 premiere.

The Young Sheldon season 6 premiere repeats the show's best moment, but it doesn't get far enough to be as good as it was the first time. Sheldon and his family are back on the small screen following The Big Bang Theory prequel's annual summer break. Young Sheldon season 6, episode 1, "Four Hundred Cartons of Undeclared Cigarettes and a Niblingo" picks up where the Young Sheldon season 5 finale left off, allowing more interactions among the Coopers, including a special one between Sheldon (Iain Armitage) and Mary (Zoe Perry).

Despite having three kids, it's clear that the Cooper matriarch favored Sheldon. This was apparent when Mary appeared on The Big Bang Theory where she usually criticized her other kids in front of the Pasadena gang. Young Sheldon initially leaned on their mother-son relationship, but their interactions have become rarer, especially in season 5. So it was refreshing to see Sheldon and Mary had a great talk in the Young Sheldon season 6 premiere, and if it ran a little longer, it could have been one of their best conversations ever.

Mary questions God for everything that she and her family is going through and Sheldon caught her doing so in the Young Sheldon season 6 premiere. This led to them discussing faith, with Sheldon questioning Mary's continued belief in a higher power even though she, herself, admits that it feels like the Lord that she worships seems to go out of his way to ruin her life. Instead of the Cooper matriarch standing her ground and coming up with a great reply, she evaded the question altogether, effectively cutting the conversation short. This particular scene had the potential to be as great as the pair's insightful conversation back in Young Sheldon season 2 where Mary also experienced a crisis of faith after the tragic death of a young girl. Unlike their latest discussion, however, the pair had a longer talk that ended with Mary regaining her faith thanks to Sheldon's rationale.

Why Young Sheldon Now Lacks Sheldon & Mary Interactions

Due to their special relationship, Mary and her son were usually partnered up in earlier seasons of Young Sheldon. That has changed since Sheldon started college at East Texas Tech. Separating the boy genius from the Coopers started becoming an issue in Young Sheldon season 5 as he barely had any interactions with his family members except when they all found themselves at home at the same time. Between this and Mary's previous job at church, it became much more difficult to find an opportunity for Sheldon to have a one-on-one with his mother. Hopefully, this changes in Young Sheldon season 6 after their interesting conversation in the premiere.

After the congregation turned its back on the Coopers in light of Georgie's (Montana Jordan) current predicament, it seems like Mary is seriously questioning her commitment to her church. The fact that she shut the door on Matt Hobby’s Pastor Jeff, to who Mary was devoted in the past, indicates that she is seriously angry at how she and her family have been treated by her so-called community. As she ruminates about her faith, perhaps Young Sheldon can revisit the conversation she's had with Sheldon in the premiere.
