The One Pokémon Everyone's Used But Doesn't Know What It Looks Like

Over the years, the Pokémon franchise has spawned over nine hundred fantastical creatures for players to catch and catalog, but there's only one that no player has ever really seen. Mimikyu, the Disguise Pokémon, was introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon, and has consistently worn a disguise concealing its true form. In various Pokémon media, its true appearance has only ever been teased, but there is a dark reason for its deception.

Since its debut in Pokémon Sun and Moon, Mimikyu has had a consistent appearance: that of an unknown figure wearing a Pikachu costume. Canonically, Mimikyu wears this disguise in order to capitalize on Pikachu being the most popular Pokémon, hoping that the emulation would allow it to make friends. As such, Mimikyu has gone to great lengths to never reveal itself, becoming enraged when its costume is damaged in battle. However, while the games haven't shown Mimikyu's true form, another very specific piece of Pokémon media gave fans a glimpse.

In a particular episode of Pokémon the Series: Sun and Moon, Team Rocket's Jessie contends with her Mimikyu's disguise being damaged. Towards the end of the episode, Jessie feeds the Mimikyu some food, and it momentarily lifts its costume in order to eat, giving viewers a brief glimpse at what was underneath: an amorphous black figure. This may not seem like much, but it led to plenty of creative Pokémon fan art featuring Mimikyu, being the most significant reveal about the creature's appearance to date. And even though the lack of fine detail is somewhat anticlimactic, it actually hints at Mimikyu's terrifying lore and dark inspirations.

Mimikyu's True Form Has A Dark History

Mimikyu's true form has dark origins in Pokémon lore.

Much of the mystery surrounding Mimikyu can be explained by the fact that it is a Ghost-type Pokémon. Its nebulous form and somber origin are certainly befitting of a ghost, but in-game lore elements add even more layers to the truth behind Mimikyu's disguise. In several of Mimikyu's Pokédex entries, mentions are made regarding those who see the Pokémon's true appearance suddenly dying in mysterious circumstances shortly thereafter. Mimikyu is known to violently resist having its disguise damaged or removed, and it is said to mercilessly attack any who do so. This revelation turns Mimikyu's cute gimmick into the reason for it being one of the scariest Ghost-type Pokémon in the games.

Visually, Mimikyu's real form may seem uninteresting, but its nebulous nature fits its Ghost typing and the mystery surrounding it. Given its supposed curse, the lack of definition may even be a way to "protect" fans from learning the truth. In any case, letting one's imagination run wild can often be even more terrifying than confirming any particular truth. To this day, Pokémon fans haven't truly gotten a good look at Mimikyu, but that's probably for their Trainers' own good.
