The Dungeons & Dragons Movie Has 1 Secret Weapon For Success

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is set to release in March 2023, and already contains a secret weapon that bodes well for the film. The film will be the fourth official Dungeons & Dragons movie, yet holds no connection to the previous trilogy of films. Instead, it is a reboot of the series and is hoping to kickstart a franchise with a spin-off TV show already in the works.

Dungeons & Dragons has not been overly successful as a live-action adaptation, with the original movie released in 2000 bombing at the box-office, only leading to two direct-to-DVD sequels. With Honor Among Thieves and its varied cast, Paramount hopes to rekindle the flame and begin the franchise anew. Well, there is one specific aspect of the 2023 reboot that bodes well for this, with the film having a secret weapon for success.

This secret weapon comes in the form of the film's directing and writing duo. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are directing the film and wrote the script based on a story from Chris McKay and Michael Gilio. It is in this duo, as well as the talented writers of the story, that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves possesses the secret weapon that hopefully makes the film a success. From the directors' previous works, there remains hope that the Dungeons & Dragons film will work and kickstart the franchise the studio hopes for.

Why Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley Are Perfect For D&D

One of those previous films from Goldstein and Daley was Game Night, a comedy movie released in 2018. Game Night is one of the more underrated modern comedies, equal parts hilarious and competently directed. However, the main reason Game Night bodes well for Dungeons & Dragons is that it is also based on a game-come-to-life concept. Game Night is about a murder mystery party gone wrong, and draws a lot of its comedic aspects from spoofing typical game night concepts. Honor Among Thieves then, being a Dungeons & Dragons film, will be similar as D&D is a role-playing game that is simply being brought to life. The directors already have experience with comedic game-based aspects from Game Night, something that will only benefit the story concept of a Dungeons & Dragons film.

Secondly, Goldstein and Daley are credited as both story and screenwriters of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Homecoming was the first film in the MCU's Spider-Man trilogy and was very well received for its balancing of humor and serious moments. While this balancing act in Homecoming's script bodes well for Honor Among Thieves as Goldstein and Daley wrote the script for the latter, it is in the more fantastical elements of Spider-Man that D&D will benefit. D&D is a very high fantasy game that, based on the trailer for Honor Among Thieves, will naturally be heavily employed. In writing Homecoming, it is clear that the directing duo has a clear grasp on how to handle the more fantastical elements of big blockbuster films, something that again can only bring more success to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
