Secret Wars Can’t Repeat Endgame’s Captain Marvel Mistake With Fantastic 4

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Fantastic Four will be introduced shortly before Avengers: Secret Wars, and Marvel Studios cannot make the same mistake with Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame of giving them small roles. The roadmap for the MCU after Avengers: Endgame finally became a lot more clear after San Diego Comic-Con 2022 where the entire Phase 5 slate and beginning and end of Phase 6 were announced. This is where audiences learned Fantastic 4 kicks off Phase 6 in late 2024 to be one of the important movies leading up to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2025.

Audiences have been waiting for Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing to join the MCU ever since Disney acquired 20th Century in 2019. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness delivered the first official tease of the team thanks to John Krasinski playing Earth-838's Reed Richards. It is unconfirmed that he will return to lead the MCU's Fantastic 4 movie, as it seems more likely now that the solo movie will introduce a new cast as Marvel's First Family. The Fantastic Four's MCU debut will be a huge moment, but it is also coming at a difficult time considering the universe-altering events that await in Secret Wars.

By having Fantastic 4 introduce the team just a few months before their expected roles in Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel Studios is at risk of making the same mistake they did with Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. The 2019 solo movie starring Brie Larson introduced Captain Marvel as one of the MCU's most powerful characters, putting her in a position to turn the tide against Thanos. However, Avengers: Endgame mostly wrote Captain Marvel out of the movie because she was such a new character, only for her to show up when the plot really needed her. The Fantastic Four joining the MCU so close to Avengers: Secret Wars could mean a similar mistake is made, but Marvel would be repeating Avengers: Endgame's Captain Marvel mistake by not involving them in the Phase 6 capper. They should be prominently featured in Secret Wars.

Why The Fantastic 4 Must Have Major Roles In Secret Wars

Fantastic Four Secret Wars Reed Richards Doctor Doom MCU

The announcement that Marvel Studios is adapting the comic event known as Secret Wars as Avengers 6 immediately signaled why the Fantastic Four should have major roles. Jim Shooter's original comic left Sue Storm out of the massive fight on Battleworld, but the rest of the Fantastic Four members are featured. Reed Richards is instrumental in the resolution as he helps build the portal that allows the heroes to return to their homes. When Jonathan Hickman then reimagined Secret Wars in 2015, the entire storyline was built around Reed Richards and Victor von Doom's rivalry. It is likely that the MCU will combine pieces from both comic adaptations to make Avengers: Secret Wars, but keeping the Fantastic Four at the forefront of a multiversal event story that also revolves around Kang makes sense.

The Fantastic Four playing prominent roles in Avengers: Secret Wars and being key figures in Kang's defeat would also be a great way for Marvel Studios to further signal their importance going forward. There is no doubt that Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing will be important characters for the MCU's future even after the Multiverse Saga. But knowing this from the comics and having the MCU show it is different. By giving the team major roles in Avengers: Secret Wars, the Fantastic Four will be clearly positioned as the new faces of the MCU for Phase 7 and beyond.
