Sam Wilson's Evil Redesign Turns Him into a Demonic Captain America

While Sam Wilson is a perfect representation of what it means to be a true hero within the Marvel Universe, one evil redesign turns him into a demonic Captain America–one which pays tribute to the darkest world within Marvel’s multiverse: Age of Apocalypse.

Sam Wilson began his Marvel Comics career as the superhero Falcon who often worked with Steve Rogers’ Captain America and the other Avengers. Eventually, Falcon proved himself to be the perfect person to take up the mantle of Captain America after Steve’s temporary retirement. Since then, Wilson has perfectly encapsulated the heroic nature Captain America is meant to represent–until this truly demonic redesign, that is.

A 2016 variant cover honoring Age of Apocalypse by artist Khoi Pham for All-New, All-Different Avengers #9 by Mark Waid and Mahmud Asrar features a number of characters who are all sporting a darker tone than they normally do, including Sam Wilson's Captain America. Rather than the usual Stars and Stripes mixed with his Falcon-aesthetic, Wilson has adopted a truly evil look, one complete with giant bat-like wings, an inverted star emblem on his chest, and a menacing glow that only highlights the darkness of his suit. Sam Wilson has effectively become the perfect antitheses of his former self within the context of this jaw-dropping variant cover with his visual appearance being a worthy depiction of the horror associated with the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse.

Sam Wilson becomes an evil Captain America.

The Age of Apocalypse is an alternate reality within the Marvel multiverse designated Earth-295. This world came to be after Legion tampered with the timeline and traveled back in time to kill Magneto so that the villain would never become the evil mutant extremist his father, Charles Xavier, would have to commit so much of his time thwarting. However, Legion accidentally killed his father instead of Magneto, which resulted in Legion ceasing to exist and the Marvel Universe going down a much different path. With the absence of Xavier, Magneto stepped up to be the leader of the X-Men, but another villain’s variant was not so heroic as a result of the changes to the timeline: Apocalypse. Apocalypse saw Xavier’s death as the perfect opportunity to conquer the world, and he did so in horrifically magnificent fashion.

Many heroes within the Age of Apocalypse timeline turned to the dark side, while other heroes never came to be at all. Some of the most shocking examples were an evil Cyclops, a disturbingly vile Beast, and even an Iron Man/Ghost Rider variant, with heroes like The Fantastic Four and Captain Marvel remaining humans with no spectacular powers at all. Now, it seems Sam Wilson’s Captain America can be added to the list of corrupted heroes who have turned evil under the influence of Apocalypse as this variant cover brings to life a sinister Sam Wilson who became a demonic Captain America.
