With just a few months remaining until its arrival, a National Treasure: Edge of History new trailer introduces the lead of the next chapter of the franchise and teases the return of some familiar faces for the Disney+ show. Based on the National Treasure films that starred Nicolas Cage as the treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates, Edge of History will introduce a new leading character Jess Morales, played by Lisette Alexis. Continuing the franchise’s central premise, the new show will see Morales discover her own family’s ties to major historical events and clues to a legendary lost treasure.SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
First announced by producer Jerry Bruckheimer back in 2020, Disney green-lit the 10-episode series early last year based on scripts penned by the original films’ co-writers Cormac and Marianne Wibberley. While the series primarily features a new and younger cast, connections were made back to the original films via the inclusion of Gates’ nerdy right-hand man, Justin Bartha’s Riley Poole, and Harvey Keitel’s FBI Agent Peter Sandusky. Other cast members joining the series include Lyndon Smith, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues and Catherine Zeta-Jones. As audiences continue to ponder the show's connection to its source franchise, they are getting a new look at National Treasure: Edge of History.

During this year’s D23 Expo, Disney+ revealed a new National Treasure: Edge of History trailer, which hints at the mystery surrounding Jess Morales’ family history. In the trailer, Keitel’s returning character appears to set Morales on the path to discovering the truth behind her family’s elusive past and the treasure linked with it. Bartha’s Riley also makes an appearance, enthusiastically inquiring what clue Morales had uncovered. Check out the new trailer below:
While the inclusion of Keitel and Bartha in the new National Treasure: Edge of History trailer will be a welcome sight for fans of the original films, the big question will be whether Cage himself makes an appearance at some point in the series. Cage has long wanted to return to the franchise and plans for a third National Treasure film have been sitting in the development pipeline for some 14 years now. Moreover, co-writer Marianne Wibberley herself indicated at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con that the series creators had wanted Cage to return as the treasure hunter Benjamin Gates, but suggested that “he’s very busy”.
Even if Cage does not manage to make a cameo appearance in the National Treasure: Edge of History series, fans can take comfort that Bruckheimer has recently said that a script for the third film will soon be going to the actor for approval. With the new series bound to reignite interest in the franchise’s original entries, it would be an opportune time to secure Cage’s return as his much-beloved character. In the meantime, fans will be able to discover what Alexis’ new character Jess Morales brings to the franchise when National Treasure: Edge of History arrives on Disney+ December 14.
