Loki Season 2 Promises To Be The Real Multiverse Of Madness

The first footage of Loki season 2 was shown off at the D23 2022 Expo, and it promises to be even wilder than Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While the first season of the Disney+ series was already crazy enough, descriptions of the Loki season 2 footage suggest that the new season will double down on the show's timeline hopping madness. Although Doctor Strange 2 promised a lot, the D23 Expo footage shows that Loki season 2 will truly explore the multiverse like never before.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Loki season 1 follows a variant of Loki created in Avengers: Endgame who is captured by the Time Variance Authority (TVA). Although he initially believes that he is going to get pruned, Loki, TVA agent Mobius M. Mobius, and another Loki variant named Sylvie quickly realize that things at the TVA are not as they initially seem. The series follows the trio and other characters on a journey that spans time and space, involving multiple multiverses, loads of Loki variants, and the man in charge of it all: He Who Remains.

Although it promised to be the MCU's first big exploration of the multiverse, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn't really feature all that much "madness." Besides a scene where Strange and Chavez fly through several universes for a minute or two, Doctor Strange 2 only takes place in a few universes, most of which don't appear all that dissimilar from the main universe. Loki, on the other hand, primarily takes place in variant timelines. At the end of Loki season 1, He Who Remains was killed and the Sacred Timeline was broken, setting Loki season 2 up to be even wilder than its predecessor. The Loki season 2 footage sees Loki being pulled through time, seeing timelines involving prisons, astronauts, holograms, and a return to the statue of Kang, hinting that the Multiverse Saga villain will be making an appearance. Doctor Strange 2 didn't have many significant universes, but Loki season 2 may finally feature the "multiversal madness" fans have been waiting for.

Why Loki Has More Multiverse Experience Than Doctor Strange

Loki Season 2 Can Tell The Multiverse Story Doctor Strange 2 Failed To

Although Doctor Strange is typically associated with the multiverse, Loki actually has more multiversal experience than the sorcerer. Loki learned about the multiverse long before Strange did, and unlike Strange, Loki has the means to travel across timelines with ease. Loki is backed by the TVA, an organization dedicated to unraveling the multiverse, whereas Strange only has the help of America Chavez. While Strange may be a powerful sorcerer, Loki is the true master of the multiverse, with him even being a part of the death of He Who Remains, the one in charge of the Sacred Timeline.

Now that the Loki season 1 ending has revealed that there are multiple TVAs, Loki season 2 will truly delve into the depths of the multiverse in a way that Doctor Strange 2 didn't. In the Loki season 2 footage, Loki says that he "saw terrible, awful things," meaning that the series may double down on both the madness and the horror of Doctor Strange. While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may have promised to be a deep dive into the multiverse, Loki season 2 will see Loki, Sylvie, and Mobius go even further than ever before.
