J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Crew May Be Returning For More Comic Adventures
Warning: spoilers ahead for "Meanwhile," appearing in Star Trek #400, ahead! The crew of JJ Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot may be returning for new comic adventures soon at IDW Publishing. The reboot universe, referred to by fans as the “Kelvin Timeline,” has been out of the public eye since 2016’s underrated, but underperforming, Star Trek: Beyond; likewise it has been four years since the crew last appeared in comics, with the conclusion of Star Trek Boldly Go. That changes soon, as the publisher revealed in the landmark Star Trek #400 that the Kelvin crew will be returning for new adventures. The issue is on sale now in print and digital.SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
In 2009, director JJ Abrams, hot off the success of Lost and Mission Impossible III, retooled Star Trek for a new generation, casting fresh faces in the established roles of Kirk, Spock, Uhura and the rest; 23rd-century technology got a similar face lift as well. The film was a massive box-office and critical success, spawning two sequels: 2013’s Wrath of Khan quasi-remake Into Darkness and 2016’s Beyond. Since then, the Kelvin universe has gone dormant–a fourth film is planned and scheduled for 2023, but has suffered from a revolving door of directors. Shortly after Beyond’s premiere, IDW launched Star Trek: Boldly Go, which followed the further adventures of the Kelvin timeline crew, but the series concluded in 2018 and there has been no sign of the Kelvin timeline since.

Yet in the one-page story “Meanwhile,” all of that changes. Scotty and his assistant Keenser are in engineering; Scotty has dozed off, leaving Keenser to occupy himself. Keenser wakes Scotty up, but Scotty berates him, telling him the upgrades should have been done hours ago. Scotty laments this is why it is taking so long to get the Enterprise ready for action, before dozing off again, much to Keenser’s chagrin. The story ends, telling readers to “stay tuned.” The story is written by Mike Johnson, illustrated by Angel Hernandez and Steven Dellasalla.
After the disappointing returns on Star Trek Beyond, the Kelvin crew was put on hiatus–one that was beginning to look more and more permanent, but now they are set to return. Both IDW’s Star Trek and Star Trek: Boldly Go showed the potential of the Kelvin Enterprise crew, a potential that will soon be (hopefully) fulfilled. Boldly Go in particular demonstrated this, adding in brand-new characters and pitting the crew against adversaries such as the Borg; the series allowed the Kelvin crew to grow and change beyond the movies. The Kelvin crew had an undeniable chemistry, and it would be a shame for it to go to waste. IDW realizes this, and will be bringing the Kelvin crew back for more adventures.
The fourth Kelvin film has struggled to find a director, which has delayed the project considerably. This, coupled with Paramount seemingly refocusing their efforts on television shows set in the Prime timeline, it might be tempting to say the sun has set on the Kelvin Enterprise, but IDW Publishing has hinted at more adventures to come from JJ Abrams’ Star Trek crew.
